Well, JPSC is around the corner and like any other aspirant I am also going through so many articles, minerals, tribes, non-tribes and their culture and what not, everything related to Jharkhand and the primary source for all this information is definitely , Dr. Manish Ranjan book for Jharkhand GS.
Few days ago, I was reading the chapter ,'' Emergence of Sadan''. Sadan were the non-tribe permanent residents of Jharkhand who speak the similar native language as the tribal people. But what attracted my attention was the pronoun used for Sadan which was only he rather than she/he. My question is why? Sadan developed in the Aristotle era or what; when women belonged to the slavery category .
So, the purpose of writing this blog is to talk about ''the progressive documentation and the role language plays in it.''
Language plays a pivotal role in shaping societal norms, perceptions, and ideologies. Throughout history, the different languages have evolved to reflect changes in societal attitudes and values. One such evolution involves the quest for gender inclusivity in language use. The shift from exclusive terms like ''his'' to inclusive alternatives like his/her exemplifies the essence of progressive literature. This blog aims to explore the importance of using gender-neutral language in the context of humankind and its contribution to fostering an inclusive and equitable society.
Language is a dynamic entity, constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of its speakers. Traditionally, English, like many languages, tended to default to male-centric terms when referring to humanity. Phrases such as ''his'' or ''mankind'' were used as generic terms, often unintentionally excluding or marginalizing women. The evolving understanding of gender equality has prompted a linguistic shift towards more inclusive language, acknowledging the presence and contributions of all genders.
The use of ''his/her'' or other gender neutral alternatives in literature is not merely a linguistic adjustment; it is a reflection of a broader societal commitment to equality. Literature has the power to shape perspectives and influence cultures attitudes. By embracing inclusive language, writers contribute to the dismantling of gender stereotypes and biases ingrained in society. This linguistic shift fosters a more egalitarian mindset, challenging preconceived notions and promoting inclusivity.
Progressive literature seeks to represent the diverse experiences and identities of individuals within society. The use of inclusive language is a conscious effort to acknowledge the existence of all genders and to empower readers from various backgrounds. When literature reflects the richness of human diversity, it resonates with a broader audience, allowing individuals to see themselves reflected in the narratives and fostering a sense of belonging.
In a globalized world, where cultures intertwine and diverse perspectives coexist, the need for inclusive language becomes even more pronounced. Literature serves as a bridge between cultures, and the use of gender neutral terms contributes to cultural sensitivity. By adopting inclusive language, writers demonstrate a commitment to understanding and respecting the diverse identities present in the global community.
The need for his/her in literature is not a mere linguistic nuance; it is a call for societal transformation. As literature mirrors the values and aspirations of a society, the shift towards inclusive language reflects a commitment to equality , representation, and understanding. Embracing his/her in the narrative of humankind is a small yet significant step towards a more inclusive and progressive future. In the realm of literature, language has the power to shape minds and influence societal norms, making it imperative for writers to actively contribute to the promotion of a more equitable and inclusive world through their choice of words.
When we read documents written by a renounced IAS officer, we expect it to be the progressive literature. Sadly, We do not find any such document even to this date. My request is, It might be the smallest error of your book sir, but if you consider it as your mistake then we can be able to make a just and equal society in a state which is ‘’the homeland of tribes.’’
